Zwolle is the capital city of the
province of Overijssel, located about 120 kilometres northeast
of Amsterdam and lying near the banks of the River Ijssel. It
is connected by the A28 - Utrecht, Groningen (E232) highway,
the A50 - Eindhoven, and the N50 Zwolle - Emmeloord. Zwolle is
a friendly city to visit, with some beautiful 13th and 15th century
building including the Roman Catholic Onze Lieve Vrouwe ten Hemelopneming-basilica
dating back to 1399. The church tower, called Peperbus (pepperbox),
is one of the tallest and most famous church towers in the Netherlands.
The Grote of St. Michaelskerk houses a majestic Baroque
organ built by Arp Schnitger in 1719, and completed by his sons
after his death (the organ has a fascinating history). |
