Tilburg Noord-Brabant
 |

Tilburg is located in the southern
province of Noord-Brabant. The town hosts the famous 10 day-long
funfair, the largest of the Benelux, held in July each year.
Also interesting are the Tilburg winecity, Festipet streettheater,
the fleamarket Meimarkt and the Tilburg Ten Miles sportsgame
for runners. Tilburg was once the wool capital of the Netherlands.
The poor farmers living in the hamlets decided to stop selling
their sheepwool and to weave it themselves. Looms took up a huge
space in their already small houses. In the 17th century when
the number of looms in Tilburg was about 300, enterprising people
supplied the weavers with the raw materials for their "home
working" and the first Tilburg "millhouses" had
come into existence. From that point on, the wool- industry underwent
rapid growth and in 1881 Tilburg had as many as 145 woolmills.
Home weaving continued until the early years of the 20th century. |

North Brabant is a large province
of the Netherlands, located in the south of the country, bordered
by Belgium in the south, the Meuse River in the north, Limburg
in the east and Zeeland in the west, centrally positioned between
the port cities of Rotterdam and Antwerp and the German Ruhr
area. Its capital is s Hertogenbosch. North Brabant is
mostly flat, but nearly every part of it is above sea level,
therefore there are not as many canals as in the lower parts
of The Netherlands. While most of the population lives in urban
areas, the province is scattered with villages and most of the
land is cultivated. Forests, heathlands and dune areas can be
found, where cycling and walking are popular. There are theme
parks at Safari Beekse Bergen or Speelland, Efteling theme park,
full of breathtaking attractions, fairy tales, natural beauty
and spectacular shows, and nature parks like the Loonse and Drunense
Duinen, Kampina or the Oisterwijkse woods and Fens. |
