The Hague or Den Haag (officially
also 's-Gravenhage) is located in the west of the country, in
the province of South Holland. It is the third-largest city in
the Netherlands after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and is the seat
of government. The foundation of The Hague as an "international
city of peace and justice" was laid in 1899, when the world's
first Peace Conference took place here. The Hague is the largest
Dutch city on the North Sea and includes two distinct beach resorts.
The main beach resort Scheveningen, in the northwestern part
of the city, is a popular destination for tourists and young
people. The Hague has its share of museums and cultural institutions
including Madurodam, a miniature city containing hundreds of
scale-models of Dutch landmarks in a typically Dutch miniature
landscape and the Mauritshuis exhibiting many paintings by Dutch
masters, such as Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn and Paulus
Potter. |
