Places to visit in Zealand |
|
 |
Zealand is a province of the Netherlands
located in the south-west of the country, consisting of a number
of islands (hence its name, meaning "sea-land") and
a strip bordering Belgium. Large parts of Zealand are below sea
level and its sunny beaches make it a popular holiday destination
in the summer ( it has the most hours of sun in the Netherlands).
From here you can explore the flat polder landscape which has
been painted so beautifully by a number of famous Dutch painters.
A trip through this region will take you to picturesque villages
offering a diverse range of regional products from the sea. There
are many old cities and towns in Zealand, aswell as many villages,
each with their own character, they can be grouped in accordance
with their characteristic building pattern. Along with church
towers, the windmills often determine the horizon. High stone
tower mills, octagonal Zealand grondzeilers (windmills
which turning sails skim the yard around the mill) and wooden
post-mills still impress with their specific building construction
and technique. Most of them can be visited. New beacons on the
horizon are the slender, white, wind turbines such as those on
the Oesterdam and the Oosterscheldekering. A clean energy source
which fully utilises the power of the wind. A visit to the 'Neeltje
Jans' educational centre is recommended, where you can learn
about people's life and struggle with the sea. This includes
the Hurricane Machine (new), the Expo Whale World, the Water
Playground, Water Slides, the Seal Basin, as well as films about
the 1953 Disaster and the construction of the Delta Works. |
