Middelburg is a city in the south-western Netherlands and the capital of the province of Zeeland, situated on the peninsula of Walcheren. The city of Middelburg dates back to the late 8th /early 9th century when it was the central fortress in the defence line built to protect the island of Walcheren. It became an important trading centre in the trade between England and the cities of Flanders during the Middle Ages. Much of the old city centre was bombed flat during WW11, and after the war, the centre was rebuilt as much as possible along pre-war lines. After the reconstruction, modern Middelburg re-gained its historic character; there are lavish 17th and 18th century merchant houses and storehouses standing along canals, the old city moats are still there and the medieval abbey is used today as a museum and as the seat of the provincial government.

Places to visit in Zealand

Zealand

Zealand is a province of the Netherlands located in the south-west of the country, consisting of a number of islands (hence its name, meaning "sea-land") and a strip bordering Belgium. Large parts of Zealand are below sea level and its sunny beaches make it a popular holiday destination in the summer ( it has the most hours of sun in the Netherlands). From here you can explore the flat polder landscape which has been painted so beautifully by a number of famous Dutch painters. A trip through this region will take you to picturesque villages offering a diverse range of regional products from the sea. There are many old cities and towns in Zealand, aswell as many villages, each with their own character, they can be grouped in accordance with their characteristic building pattern. Along with church towers, the windmills often determine the horizon. High stone tower mills, octagonal Zealand “grondzeilers” “(windmills which turning sails skim the yard around the mill) and wooden post-mills still impress with their specific building construction and technique. Most of them can be visited. New beacons on the horizon are the slender, white, wind turbines such as those on the Oesterdam and the Oosterscheldekering. A clean energy source which fully utilises the power of the wind. A visit to the 'Neeltje Jans' educational centre is recommended, where you can learn about people's life and struggle with the sea. This includes the Hurricane Machine (new), the Expo Whale World, the Water Playground, Water Slides, the Seal Basin, as well as films about the 1953 Disaster and the construction of the Delta Works.
