Meppel Drenthe
 |
 |
 |
 |
Meppel lies in the south-west of the
province Drenthe and is the oldest community of the province.
It is a small city on the border of Drenthe and Overijssel. Meppel
developed in the 16th century as a transport and distribution
inland harbour for turf, when peat was shipped from Drenthe to
the other parts of the Netherlands. There used to be a lot of
waterways in the town, but now only one remains. The city centre
has a cozy atmosphere, with the old house fronts, small streets
and beautiful squares. The scenery of
Drenthe is characterised by forests, moors, former fen communities,
brook valleys and sheep. This region is ideal for walking, cycling,
and mountain-biking. |

There are no less than 52 hunebeds
(Megalithic tombs) and well over a thousand burial mounds in
the area. For thousands of years, these megalithic tombs have
withstood the test of time. 'Hunebeds' are one of the oldest
burial sites in the country made from impressive stone formations.
You can also visit the monumental village of Orvelte, the 'Boomkroonpad'
(walking path at tree top level), the National Parks of 'Dwingelerveld'
and 'Drents Friese Wold' and Kabouterland (Land of the Gnomes)
in Exloo. |
