Leeuwarden is the capital city of
the province of Friesland, situated in the north of the country.
It sits on the canal between Harlingen and Groningen, about 35
kms west of Groningen. Leeuwarden is the starting and finishing
point for the celebrated Elfstedentocht, a 200km-long speed skating
race over the Frisian waterways that is held when winter conditions
in the province allow. It is also the site of the country's largest
cattle market, and on Ascension Day, the largest flower market
in the Netherlands is held here. |

Friesland is an area of picturesque
fishing villages and historic towns. Visitors should not miss
the old towns of Hindelopen, Stavoren and Dokkum, the 'Friese
Meren' (the lakes of Friesland), and their pretty villages and
the National Park "Drents-Friese Woud" (Forest). The
Waddenzee is a unique part of the North Sea. Weather permitting,
you can even walk across the mudflats between the mainland and
a Wadden Island. |

By Air - Amsterdam's airport Schiphol (www.schiphol.nl) is
the Netherlands’ main international airport and the third
busiest in Europe. Rotterdam Airport (www.rotterdam-airport.nl)
is much smaller but has handy links to the UK, Germany and Mediterranean
destinations.
By Ferry - Several companies operate car/passenger ferries
between the Netherlands and the UK. Stenaline (www.stenaline.co.uk)
sails between Harwich and Hoek van Holland, while P&O North
Sea Ferries (www.poferries.com) operates an overnight ferry every
evening between Hull and Europoort (near Rotterdam).
By Train - The Netherlands has good train links to Germany
and Belgium and on to France.
By Bus - Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and a few of Holland’s
smaller cities such as Den Haag and Utrecht, are well connected
to the rest of Europe by long-distance bus.
