Hoogeveen Drenthe
 |
 |
 |
 |
Hoogeveen is a town in the principality
of Drenthe, in northeastern Netherlands. It was originally one
of the peat-harvesting districts. Its coat of arms is white,
with a pile of peat covered in straw in the centre and beehives
on each side, representing the town's first two major industries.
Access to the town is provided by the A28 Utrecht to Groningen
highway and the N/A37 Hoogeveen to Germany highway. The scenery of Drenthe is characterised by forests,
moors, former fen communities, brook valleys and sheep. This
region is ideal for walking, cycling, and mountain-biking. |

There are no less than 52 hunebeds
(Megalithic tombs) and well over a thousand burial mounds in

withstood the test of time. 'Hunebeds' are one of the oldest
burial sites in the country made from impressive stone formations.
You can also visit the monumental village of Orvelte, the 'Boomkroonpad'
(walking path at tree top level), the National Parks of 'Dwingelerveld'
and 'Drents Friese Wold' and Kabouterland (Land of the Gnomes)
