-Hertogenbosch is the capital of the
province of North Brabant, located in the south of the Netherlands,
80 km south of Amsterdam. It is known as Den Bosch, but the city's
official name comes from des Hertogen bosch - "the Duke's
forest". The duke in question was Henry I, Duke of Brabant,
whose house then had a large estate at nearby Orthen for at least
four centuries. He founded a new town located on some forested
dunes in the middle of a marsh. -Hertogenbosch was the birthplace
and home of one of the greatest painters of the northern renaissance,
Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516). 's-Hertogenbosch was founded
as a fortified city and that heritage can still be seen today,
there are always renovations going on in the city to preserve
the many old buildings, fortifications, churches and statues.
The old city of 's-Hertogenbosch is still almost completely surrounded
by continuous ramparts. |

North Brabant is a large province
of the Netherlands, located in the south of the country, bordered
by Belgium in the south, the Meuse River in the north, Limburg
in the east and Zeeland in the west, centrally positioned between
the port cities of Rotterdam and Antwerp and the German Ruhr
area. Its capital is ’s Hertogenbosch. North Brabant is
mostly flat, but nearly every part of it is above sea level,
therefore there are not as many canals as in the lower parts
of The Netherlands. While most of the population lives in urban
areas, the province is scattered with villages and most of the
land is cultivated. Forests, heathlands and dune areas can be
found, where cycling and walking are popular. There are theme
parks at Safari Beekse Bergen or Speelland, Efteling theme park,
full of breathtaking attractions, fairy tales, natural beauty
and spectacular shows, and nature parks like the Loonse and Drunense
Duinen, Kampina or the Oisterwijkse woods and Fens. |

Rotterdam and Rotterdam Airport.
By Air - Amsterdam's airport Schiphol (www.schiphol.nl) is
the Netherlands’ main international airport and the third
busiest in Europe. Rotterdam Airport (www.rotterdam-airport.nl)
is much smaller but has handy links to the UK, Germany and Mediterranean
destinations.
By Ferry - Several companies operate car/passenger ferries
between the Netherlands and the UK. Stenaline (www.stenaline.co.uk)
sails between Harwich and Hoek van Holland, while P&O North
Sea Ferries (www.poferries.com) operates an overnight ferry every
evening between Hull and Europoort (near Rotterdam).
By Train - The Netherlands has good train links to Germany
and Belgium and on to France.
By Bus - Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and a few of Holland’s
smaller cities such as Den Haag and Utrecht, are well connected
to the rest of Europe by long-distance bus.

many beautiful walking and cycling routes here. We recommend
a visit to the cosy Oisterwijk, with its many terraces and restaurants,
or the capital of Brabant, Den Bosch, with its old and typical
inner town. Fun excursions with the kids are : the Efteling (26
km), Het Land van Ooit (13 km) and the Beekse Bergen (18 km).
At 6 km of the house you will enjoy the large recreational lake
'De IJzeren Man', where you can swim, water cycle, row and sail
