Helmond Noord-Brabant

Helmond is a city in the province
of North Brabant in the southern Netherlands. It lies along the
Aa River and the Zuid-Willems Canal east of Eindhoven. The centre
of Helmond has a castle which was built by Jan III van Berlaer
around 1350. Helmond has many textile companies, the Vlisco factory
is located next to the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal which runs through
the city. Its textile factories and iron foundries have suffered
in recent decades, and the town is now dependent on the service
sector. A 15th-century castle formerly housed the local government,
which moved out in 1982 and was replaced by a small museum and
an art gallery. There are several wildlife preserves and other
castles in the vicinity. |

North Brabant is a large province
of the Netherlands, located in the south of the country, bordered
by Belgium in the south, the Meuse River in the north, Limburg
in the east and Zeeland in the west, centrally positioned between
the port cities of Rotterdam and Antwerp and the German Ruhr
area. Its capital is s Hertogenbosch. North Brabant is
mostly flat, but nearly every part of it is above sea level,
therefore there are not as many canals as in the lower parts
of The Netherlands. While most of the population lives in urban
areas, the province is scattered with villages and most of the
land is cultivated. Forests, heathlands and dune areas can be
found, where cycling and walking are popular. There are theme
parks at Safari Beekse Bergen or Speelland, Efteling theme park,
full of breathtaking attractions, fairy tales, natural beauty
and spectacular shows, and nature parks like the Loonse and Drunense
Duinen, Kampina or the Oisterwijkse woods and Fens. |
