Heerlen Limburg
 |
 |
 |
 |
Heerlen is a city in the province
of Limburg. Heerlen became a centre for the coal mining industry
in the Netherlands in the late 19th century, but there is little
evidence of mining activity. On of the few remaining mining buildings
(shaft 2 of the Oranje Nassau I) now houses the Dutch Mine Museum.
Near the numerous small rivers around Heerlen, many more older
buildings can be found, including a couple of watermills - the
Weltermolen (14th century), Eikendermolen (15th century), Oliemolen
(16th century), and Schandelermolen (17th century)). there are
also castles (Kasteel Hoensbroek oldest part 1380, Kasteel Terworm
15th century) and old farms. |

Places to visit in Limburg |
|
 |
Limburg is the southern-most of the
twelve provinces of the Netherlands, located in the southeastern
part of the country. It is bordered by Belgium to the south and
part of the west, Germany to the east, the Dutch province of
North Brabant partly to the west, and the province of Gelderland
to the north. Its capital is the cultural city Maastricht, the
most European city, where the Treaty of Maastricht was signed.
Limburg is a European region with a highly distinct character,
offering an internationally oriented business culture and an
attractive living environment. Places of interest for visitors
include the caves of Valkenburg, Theme Park Mondo Verde (Landgraaf),
the gardens of the castle of Arcen and Thorn, the white town.
The region has many beautiful churches, chapels and monasteries,
testament to its Roman Catholic history. |
