Harlingen is a city and port in the northern Netherlands, in the province of Friesland on the Wadden Sea. It is one of the oldest Frisian towns with a long history of fishing and shipping, and it is from here that the ferries to the Wadden islands of Vlieland and Terschelling depart. Harlingen is intersected by numerous canals, has an excellent harbour, and exports dairy products, potatoes, and meat. The town was inundated by floods in 1134 and in 1566, before a dyke was constructed for its protection. Harlingen is situated 25 km southwest of Leeuwarden.

Friesland

Friesland is an area of picturesque fishing villages and historic towns. Visitors should not miss the old towns of Hindelopen, Stavoren and Dokkum, the 'Friese Meren' (the lakes of Friesland), and their pretty villages and the National Park "Drents-Friese Woud" (Forest). The Waddenzee is a unique part of the North Sea. Weather permitting, you can even walk across the mudflats between the mainland and a Wadden Island.
