Harderwijk Gelderland
 |
 |
 |
 |
Harderwijk is a small city in the
eastern Netherlands in the province of Gelderland. Harderwijk
is an old Zuiderzeetown, it lies on what used to be the Zuider
Zee shore (now the IJsselmeer) and consequently its economy was
strongly based on fishing and seafaring in general. This dramatically
changed after 1932, when the Zuiderzee was cut off from the North
Sea for safety reasons. Nowadays there are few fishing boats
remaining in the harbour which is now mainly home to yachts.
An annual event illustrating the former importantance of the
fishing industry to Harderwijk is Aaltjesdag, which translates
to Eel day. Fish can still be bought at stands and restaurants
on the boulevard throughout the year except for the winter months.
Today, Harderwijk is probably known best for the Dolfinarium,
a marine mammal park where dolphin shows are held and various
other marine mammals and fish are kept. |

Places to visit in Gelderland |
|
 |
Gelderland is one of the oldest and
largest Dutch Provinces, located in the central eastern part
of the country. It occupies an area extending from the German
border westward to the narrow Lake Veluwe (separating Gelderland
from several polders of Flevoland province) between the provinces
of Overijssel (north) and Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, and Utrecht
(south). The capital city is Arnhem, although the two other major
cities, Nijmegen and Apeldoorn have more inhabitants. The city
of Arnhem is a remarkable place, where traces of World War II
can still be found. Places to visit include the National Park
'De Hoge Veluwe' and its Kröller-Müller Museum, the
castles of Doorwerth and Ammersoyen, the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum
(Dutch Open Air Museum) Arnhem, Apenheul (Primate Park, Apeldoorn)
and Ouwehands Dierenpark (Zoo, Rhenen). |
