Groningen is the capital city of the
province of Groningen and is the largest city in the north of
the country. It is a university city with a rich academic tradition
dating back to 1614; today around 45,000 students live here.
The A28 motorway connects the city of Groningen to Utrecht, via
Zwolle and Amersfoort. One of the main tourist attractions is
the Martinitoren (Martini Tower), the highest church tower in
Groningen offering a great view over the city and surrounding
area. The tower is located at the north-western corner of the
Grote Markt (Main Square). Groningen is a cultural centre with
its own city theatre (Stadsschouwburg), located on the Turfsingel
and the Groninger Museum, designed by Alessandro Mendini. The
museum has been transformed into one of the most modern and innovative
of its kind in the Netherlands. The city also has a science museum,
a comics museum and a tobacco museum. |

Places to visit in Groningen |

Groningen is the northeasternmost
province of the Netherlands. To the east it borders the German
state of Niedersachsen (districts of Leer and Emsland), in the
south Drenthe, in the west Friesland and in the north the Wadden
Sea. The capital of the province is the city of Groningen. The
province has an abundance of space and tranquillity, and along
the pretty country lanes and among extensive farmlands, are ancient
churches and tiny villages. The city of Groningen has picturesque
streets and squares, and its typical pubs and shops. The historical
towns of Ter Apel and Bourtange (fortress) should also be visited. |
