Emmen Drenthe
 |
 |
 |
 |
Emmen is a town in the province of
Drenthe, northeastern Netherlands, close to the border with Germany.
It was once the centre of the peat colonies established in the
19th century to convert the surrounding peat fields to agricultural
use, whose communities have dotted the province of Drenthe since
the Middle Ages. As peat digging declined after 1920, it grew
into the foremost urban and industrial centre of Drenthe since
textile, metallurgical, chemical, pharmaceutical, and timber
industries were established there after World War II. Emmen has
a zoo and a museum, and several hunebedden (huns
graves; prehistoric funereal monuments built with large
boulders that were probably deposited during the Ice Age). |

Places to visit in Drenthe |
|
 |
The scenery of Drenthe is characterised
by forests, moors, former fen communities, brook valleys and
sheep. This region is ideal for walking, cycling, and mountain-biking.
There are no less than 52 hunebeds (Megalithic tombs) and well
over a thousand burial mounds in the area. For thousands of years,
these megalithic tombs have withstood the test of time. 'Hunebeds'
are one of the oldest burial sites in the country made from impressive
stone formations. You can also visit the monumental village of
Orvelte, the 'Boomkroonpad' (walking path at tree top level),
the National Parks of 'Dwingelerveld' and 'Drents Friese Wold'
and Kabouterland (Land of the Gnomes) in Exloo. |
