Dokkum is a pretty fortified town
in the province of Friesland, with well-preserved fortifications
known as the bolwerken. There are two preserved windmills named
Zeldenrust and De Hoop, one of them is sometimes open to the

Friesland is an area of picturesque
fishing villages and historic towns. Visitors should not miss
the old towns of Hindelopen, Stavoren and Dokkum, the 'Friese
Meren' (the lakes of Friesland), and their pretty villages and
the National Park "Drents-Friese Woud" (Forest). The
Waddenzee is a unique part of the North Sea. Weather permitting,
you can even walk across the mudflats between the mainland and
a Wadden Island. |

By Air - Amsterdam's airport Schiphol (www.schiphol.nl) is
the Netherlands main international airport and the third
busiest in Europe. Rotterdam Airport (www.rotterdam-airport.nl)
is much smaller but has handy links to the UK, Germany and Mediterranean
destinations.
By Ferry - Several companies operate car/passenger ferries
between the Netherlands and the UK. Stenaline (www.stenaline.co.uk)
sails between Harwich and Hoek van Holland, while P&O North
Sea Ferries (www.poferries.com) operates an overnight ferry every
evening between Hull and Europoort (near Rotterdam).
By Train - The Netherlands has good train links to Germany
and Belgium and on to France.
By Bus - Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and a few of Hollands
smaller cities such as Den Haag and Utrecht, are well connected
to the rest of Europe by long-distance bus.

nature, superb and extensive cycling and footpaths. Water sport
and wading in the mud flats are possible in Holwerd. "To
be visited: The beaches of Wadden Islands Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.
Dokkum or Leeuwarden is also worth the visit. In the National
Park Lauwersmeer, you will find wild horses and a vast bird sanctuary. |
