Bolsward ia a city in the province
of Friesland in the Netherlands, a mainly agricultural province
famous for the black and white Friesian cattle. Friesland offers
wide, open scenery with farms, woodlands, moors, sand drifts
and water, which makes up some 15% of the area of Friesland.
Bolsward is part of the eleven frisian cities where the Elfstedentocht,
an ice skating marathon, is held. This is a rare event which
depends on the thickness of the ice. |

Friesland is an area of picturesque
fishing villages and historic towns. Visitors should not miss
the old towns of Hindelopen, Stavoren and Dokkum, the 'Friese
Meren' (the lakes of Friesland), and their pretty villages and
the National Park "Drents-Friese Woud" (Forest). The
Waddenzee is a unique part of the North Sea. Weather permitting,
you can even walk across the mudflats between the mainland and
a Wadden Island. |

sails between Harwich and Hoek van Holland, while P&O North
Sea Ferries (www.poferries.com) operates an overnight ferry every
evening between Hull and Europoort (near Rotterdam).
By Train - The Netherlands has good train links to Germany
and Belgium and on to France.
By Bus - Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and a few of Holland’s
smaller cities such as Den Haag and Utrecht, are well connected
to the rest of Europe by long-distance bus.
