Apeldoorn Gelderland
 |
 |
 |
 |
Apeldoorn is a city in the province
of Gelderland, about 60 miles southeast of Amsterdam, in the
centre of the Netherlands. Close by is the favourite country-seat
of the Dutch royal family called the palace het Nieuwe Loo (now
Het Loo). It was originally a hunting-lodge of the dukes of Gelderland
and for over three hundred years, Het Loo was the summer residence
of the House of Orange-Nassau, which became the Dutch royal family.
In 1960 Queen Wilhelmina declared that when she died the palace
would go to the State. It did in 1962, when Wilhelmina died at
Het Loo Palace. After a thorough restoration it now houses a
national museum and library devoted to the House of Orange-Nassau
in Dutch history. |

Places to visit in Gelderland |
|
 |
Gelderland is one of the oldest and
largest Dutch Provinces, located in the central eastern part
of the country. It occupies an area extending from the German
border westward to the narrow Lake Veluwe (separating Gelderland
from several polders of Flevoland province) between the provinces
of Overijssel (north) and Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, and Utrecht
(south). The capital city is Arnhem, although the two other major
cities, Nijmegen and Apeldoorn have more inhabitants. The city
of Arnhem is a remarkable place, where traces of World War II
can still be found. Places to visit include the National Park
'De Hoge Veluwe' and its Kröller-Müller Museum, the
castles of Doorwerth and Ammersoyen, the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum
(Dutch Open Air Museum) Arnhem, Apenheul (Primate Park, Apeldoorn)
and Ouwehands Dierenpark (Zoo, Rhenen). |
