Amersfoort Utrecht
 |
 |
 |
 |
Amersfoort is the second largest city
of the province of Utrecht in central Netherlands. The inner
city has been very well preserved since the Middle Ages and exceptional
examples of its history include the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwentoren tower,
one of the tallest medieval church towers in the Netherlands
at 98 metres high. During this period, Amersfoort was an important
centre for the textile industry, and there were a large number
of breweries. In the 18th century the city flourished because
of the cultivation of tobacco. The city is the birthplace of
the painter Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944), and the Mondriaan House
exhibits a lifesize reconstruction of his workshop in Paris.
Amersfoort is well-connected to the road system with two major
motorways pass through it, to the north, the A1 motorway (Amsterdam
- Apeldoorn) and to the east, the A28 motorway (Utrecht - Groningen). |

Utrecht is the smallest province of
the Netherlands located in the centre of the country. It is bordered
by the Eemmeer in the north, Gelderland in the east, the river
Rhine in the south, South Holland in the west, and North Holland
in the northwest. The province offers a wide variety of activities
from historical villages to state-of-the-art facilities for water
sports enthusiasts. Important cities in the province are its
capital (also called Utrecht), Amersfoort and Zeist. The city
of Utrecht is one of the oldest cities of the Netherlands with
many hidden treasures spread all over the city. There are castles
and castle gardens to visit such as Kasteel de Haar, Slot Zuylen,
Huis Doorn and Kasteel Groeneveld, and the many lakes of the
"Loosdrechtse Plassen" and the "Vinkeveense Plassen". |
