Ameland West Frisian Islands
 |
 |
 |
 |
Ameland is one of the West Frisian
Islands off the north coast of the Netherlands. It consists mostly
of sand dunes. Like all West and East Frisian Islands, Ameland
is a unique piece of nature with a profusion of different plants
on the island caused by the immense variety of landscapes. One
of the scenic areas is the Oerd, a large complex of dunes which
is still expanding by the year, and over 60 different species
of birds nest there every year. Hollum is one of the four villages
on Ameland, situated on the westernmost part of the island. Prominent
in the town is a Reformed church with foundations from the 12th
century and a lighthouse, which is 59 metres high dating from
1880. |

The Wadden Islands form a unique part
of the Netherlands and include the islands of Texel, Vlieland,
Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, each with its own
character. Their attraction lies in the combination of vast beaches,
dunes, nature reserves and their tranquillity, spaceousness and
fresh air. Each island has its own attractions :
On Ameland is the Nature reserve '
't Oerd' and the historical village of Hollum .
On Texel is the National Park 'Duinen
van Texel' and Ecomare, Centre for the Wadden and the North Sea.
You can take a 'Walking across the mudflats' excursion from Texel
and Ameland.
On Terschelling is the European Nature
Reserve 'De Boschplaat'. There are cycling and walking routes
through the dunes with 70 km of cycle paths.
